Discount Profile: Vegan Danish Bakery

Being from Thornhill, I’ve been a patron of the Vegan Danish Bakery’s Yonge Street location since they opened, and have many fond memories of swinging by to pick up the most delicious pastries, birthday cakes, and of going for a gigantic plate of waffles for brunch. Last weekend I went for my first visit to their Parkdale location on Queen Street West, and was delighted to walk in and find the same beautiful, elegant atmosphere, with plenty of seating under crystal chandeliers. The case was stocked full of a wide variety of vegan pastries I have never seen anywhere else in Toronto, ones that I have never even heard of! The name is now escaping me, but I was mesmerized as the server described to me some kind of treat that was filled with layers of marzipan and marshmallow and coated in chocolate. I tried something labelled Weinerbread, but no, it wasn’t a veggie piggie in a blanket. It was a pastry stuffed with an almond flavoured custard and topped with a bit of melted chocolate. Continuing with the pastry and chocolate theme, I also opted for a chocolate croissant. The layers of flaky pastry were perfectly buttery and slightly… Read More

Discount Profile: Brunch at Vegan Danish Bakery

Care of Barbi Lazarus This isn’t the first time we’ve raved about the beautiful and delicious offerings at the Vegan Danish Bakery in Thornhill, but just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they’ve launched a brand new brunch menu available Sundays from 10:30 am to 5 pm. The first thing you notice when you walk into the Vegan Danish Bakery may not be the spectacular case of classically decorated treats, but the gorgeous and calming decor. The Vegan Danish Bakery is a bright, fancy, meticulous space with comfortable, spacious seating. Glancing at the menu, we were overwhelmed by the mix of sweet and savoury offerings, such as the ham and cheese quiche, apple cinnamon toast, and the giant viking plate that comes with sausage, scrambled “eggs”, waffles, a biscuit, and potatoes. I was intrigued by the numerous Danish waffles I had not heard of before. With three flavour options to choose from, I was lucky that my mom wanted to share and split two different kinds! We had the Jordbærgrød (Danish strawberry dessert) and the Æblegrød (Danish apple dessert), and words simply can not describe how decadent, sweet and delicious they were. The portions were extremely… Read More

Vegan Round-Up in Thornhill

Care of Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator Updated June 2018 They say we all want what we can’t have. My parents complain that all the great vegetarian restaurants are downtown, but lately I’ve been finding that there are so many great vegan hot spots in the area where I grew up that when I’m home for a visit, I don’t have time to fit it all in. Places outside of the downtown core like Thornhill, Burlington, and Oakville, now have a large enough collection of their own vegan restaurants that more and more I’m finding myself planning day-trips (see my post on great hike ‘n dine day trip ideas here) instead of hopping on the subway or my bike to get to some of my favourite places. If you’re in Thornhill or Richmond Hill anytime soon, your problem won’t be finding a place to eat, but instead narrowing down your options to pick just one or two. Vegan Danish Bakery: No matter what part of the GTA you are from, the Vegan Danish Bakery is well worth the trip to the corner of Yonge and John Streets in old Thornhill. Read More

Discount Profile: Vegan Danish Bakery

Care of Barbi Lazarus I can’t believe it has taken me this long to make a stop at the Vegan Danish Bakery, just around the corner from my childhood home. This place may be small, but it will blow you away with it’s larger than life professional cakes and pastries. When I walked in, my jaw dropped. I should have known from their presentation plates at the Vegan Bake-Off that these people know how to decorate, but the beauty and variety of their cakes still blew me away. There were whole big cakes of various kinds, as well as both mini and regular cupcakes dressed to the nines. There were super gooey cinnamon sticky rolls and there were biscotti topped with colourful candies and chocolates. Of course there were their namesake: giant danishes in cherry, blueberry or lemon. Chocolate peanut butter cake, cookies ‘n cream cake, a chocolate cupcake and of course, a vegan cherry danish! For myself and my partner, I picked up a cherry danish which was incredibly soft and fresh and didn’t skimp on the cherry filling. We also shared two slices of cake: cookies ‘n cream and chocolate peanut… Read More
