Discount Profile: Tori's Bakeshop in the Canary District

Care of Florence McCambridge I’ve been waiting for the new Tori’s Bakeshop location to open for what seems like forever, but now vegans in Toronto’s east end have something to celebrate, because everyone’s favourite organic bakery is now open! While I’m more than happy to hop on my bike and ride over to Tori’s lovely shop in the Beaches, their new location in the Canary District is within walking distance from my house, so you can understand my excitement. Just like the original location, Tori’s Bakeshop in the Canary District is bright and charming with that recognizable green and white colour scheme we all know and love. And with plenty of greenery lining the open shelving and the abundant sunshine coming in from outside, this location is sure to be busy in the summer months ahead. One thing I’ve always loved about Tori’s is that they have such an amazing selection of savoury items to go along with the sweets that make them famous. If you’ve ever enjoyed their focaccia at the Veg Food Fest, you know what I’m talking about. I decided on a Veggie Pâté Sandwich, made with mushrooms and sunflower seed pâté,… Read More

Vegetarian Directory Updates – August 2016

New Vegan & Vegan-friendly Locations   Planta (1221 Bay St.) is opening soon in Yorkville! In case you haven’t heard yet, Planta is a new vegan restaurant set to open this September in the old location of Pangea. While another vegan restaurant in Toronto may not be surprising news, this one will offer something unique. Planta will be an impressive 165-seat restaurant that will offer an internationally inspired cuisine, organic wines, and cocktails made from fresh-pressed juice, and the menus will be the creation of award-winning Chef David Lee of Nota Bene on Queen West. Chef David Lee and Chase Hospitality Group (the group behind four other popular Toronto restaurants) are partners in the opening of Planta, and say that Planta will offer daily lunch, dinner, possibly grab and go breakfast, as well as takeout. The word is that Planta will be open in time for TIFF (Sept. 8-18), which isn’t long to wait! Follow Planta on Instagram and Twitter for updates on the opening day.   The V Spot (12 Millers Lane, Dundas, 905-628-4545, www.thevspotdundas.com) is a new vegan restaurant that recently opened in Dundas, Ontario, just west of Hamilton. Picnic in a Park

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator The TVA office can be a hectic and stressful place leading up to the Veg Food Fest, no doubt. Some days the office is abuzz with the chatter of meetings and volunteers helping out, and some days we are each zeroed in on our computers not uttering a word as we try to block out all distractions, forgetting to even eat lunch or go to the bathroom (well ok…we all know it’s a bit of a stretch that I would forget to eat lunch, but others do). But no matter what unexpected twists and turns come our way or how much work piles up, I always feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work at TVA and enjoy all the pleasures it brings. Like this week, when our manager Lucas and President Diane surprised us all with a staff appreciation picnic at Christie Pits Park! Can you guess based on the location what amazing culinary delights we were treated to? None other than Apiecalypse Now’s incredible pizza, mozzarella sticks and donuts. It was the perfect destination for a relaxing afternoon as we got ready to say goodbye to our Directory Assistant… Read More

Vegetarian Directory Updates – February 2015

New Locations Boon Burger (114 Dunlop St. E, Barrie, 705-718-4193, www.boonburger.ca), Canada’s very first all vegan burger café, will be opening a Toronto location! Although it is but a whispering at the moment, the word is out that the Winnipeg based vegan burger joint is staking out Toronto neighbourhoods for their next location. Boon opened their second location in Barrie last year, and their delicious, fresh menu of burgers, salads, soups and chili dogs has been a hit north of the city. “We are very proud to offer a 100% animal-free, plant based menu. With your support, it is our goal to make every ingredient sustainable. A large part of our menu is organic, local or fair-trade, with new ingredients being added regularly.” Your days of choosing from one meager veggie burger on a menu are over. In addition to 4 kinds of vegan patties to choose from and 14 varieties of burger, Boon also offers shakes and coconut based vegan soft serve. Needless to say, news of this new location is a very, very good thing for Toronto vegans. Follow Boon Burger Barrie on Facebook and Twitter for ongoing… Read More
