Veg Guide Updates – March 2018

New Vegan Location!   Boon Burger (multiple locations, www.boonburger.ca) has a brand new location in Oakville! The new location is located at 497 Dundas St. W., and is Boon Burger’s fifth Ontario location (a fourth opened in Hamilton in early December). It’s no surprise that the 100% plant-based burger chain, which started in Winnipeg, is rapidly spreading across Ontario. Boon offers unbelievably scrumptious burgers and sides, all made in house from healthy, wholesome ingredients. There are over 20 varieties of burgers, as well as baked fries, poutine, pizza, soups and chili, and daily flavours of dairy-free soft serve ice cream. “Boon continues to sprout and we are so excited to spread the vegan goodness. Together, with the help of our existing partners as well as future partners, it is our hope to continue to offer food that eliminates needless animal suffering. We would like to set the bar for future establishments to realize that it IS possible to run a great business that reduces the footprint on the planet.” Visit Boon in Oakville or one of the other Ontario locations in Barrie, Guelph, Burlington, Hamilton, and visit… Read More

Vegetarian Directory Updates – March 2017

Now Open!   The Hearty Hooligan (368 Main St. W., Hamilton, 905-807-0577, www.theheartyhooligan.com) is now open! You may remember we reported on the upcoming opening of this vegan, comfort food location back in October last year… Well it’s finally open as of this February! The Hearty Hooligan is a punk-themed take-out spot serving up hot and ready to go vegan comfort food. “We have all kinds of wild flavours of pizza pockets, like Mac n’ Cheese, Poutine, Butter Chicken (pictured), Philly Cheesesteak, and more. We do nostalgic treats like Dunkaroos (called Punkaroos) and S’mores pop tarts. We really try to capture all the snack foods we loved as kids!” The Hearty Hooligan has also teamed up with Rescue Dogs in St. Catharines and uses their seitan. There are also events in support of animal-friendly charities which will happen throughout the year, like the recent Valentine’s Day promotion where all the proceeds from their Valentine’s Day chocolate boxes went to Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary. And as if it couldn’t get any better, there is also an in-store section of vegan grocery items! “Our shop is only 550 square feet but we have a wall of vegan goodies like GoMaxGo chocolate bars, vegan magic, soy curls,… Read More

Discount Profile: Thrive Organic Kitchen and Cafe

Care of Kharen In the very south west corner of Etobicoke lives Thrive, a fabulous vegetarian/vegan restaurant. This is especially exciting since vegetarian and vegan restaurants are virtually non-existent in Etobicoke. But even more exciting than the location is the food itself! I have been there about four times now and haven’t had anything I didn’t like. From Mexican, to Thai to Latin inspired dishes, there is something for everyone at Thrive. I brought my family to this restaurant to celebrate my birthday, which was met with plenty of moans and grumbling since I am the only vegetarian in the family – they believe the only thing better than meat is more meat (especially my teen-aged nephews). To my surprise everyone raved about their meal! My Mom wanted to come back and my nephews tried to complain about how gross their vegetarian pizza was but without much success – their plates were empty. On the menu you will find items like squash quesadillas, sprouted burgers, wraps, four kinds of pizza and Thrive Bowls. They even serve brunch: quinoa pancakes, french toast and entrees including eggs, vegan sausages and tempeh bacon. Anything can be made vegan. They have many… Read More
