Discount Profile: Hibiscus Restaurant

Hibiscus is a cozy restaurant tucked into Augusta Street in Kensington Market. While they offer delicious crepes (sweet and savoury!) and house-made ice cream; the item that members get for a discount is the soup and salad combo. The soup arrives in a mug, and it’s super cute! The flavour changes daily and seasonally. The day we visited it was sweet potato coconut. I’m not usually a fan of sweet potato, but I really enjoyed this soup, the coconut gave it a nice creaminess and it was pleasantly thick. The salad comes with a raw cracker, which is delicious on its own, but I also liked dipping it in the soup. Speaking of the salad–it’s gigantic! Hibiscus says that there are 42 ingredients in the salad, and I can definitely say that it’s not an everyday salad. Mine came with no kelp — I don’t like it– but the salad was flavourful, packed, and really more like a bowl than a salad with all the different ingredients. My favourite was the tofu, and the berries–they were so sweet!   We followed up this healthy plant-based lunch with a scoop of their house-made ice cream; the flavour… Read More

A Guide to Vegan Ice Cream in Toronto’s Veg Village

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator The latest Veg Out: Toronto’s Vegetarian Podcast gave a fabulous rundown of the increasing vegan options for ice cream around the GTA. With so many options to choose from, it’s hard to decide where to go when you feel like treating yourself to something cold and creamy. Imagine what it’s like for me, famous for my sweet tooth, working just around the corner from what’s been dubbed “veg village”, where there are FIVE places serving up vegan ice cream all within a couple blocks of each other. One might wonder how they can all stay in business at the same time. Isn’t the vegan ice cream market saturated in Kensington? But once you take a closer look, you’ll realize that each place offers something unique and special, making them all worth a visit this summer. I’ve recently designated Thursday as my Veg Village treat day, so that I can make sure I try them all before fall rolls around. Here’s a little guide to what distinguishes these great options from one another. Cosmic Treats: Anyone who thinks vegans are depriving themselves has clearly never stepped into this retro style diner… Read More

Discount Profile: Hibiscus

Care of Carly Ingram Hibiscus is a cute and cozy cafe in the Kensington Market with a vegan and gluten-free emphasis, including dairy-free ice cream and gluten-free crepes. I’d passed it many times on my way home from class and finally stopped in for lunch. I couldn’t resist the salad after reading about its healthy status and array of colours in the Toronto Star (click here to read the great review!). This rainbow salad includes marinated tofu, broccoli, carrots, kale, beans, quinoa, red beets and lentils, among other delicious flavours. And my was it delicious! The soup and salad combo is served with a delicious and crispy raw vegan cracker and a mug of super-hot squash soup. I loved that the soup came in a mug; I felt as though I was sipping a decadent and savory drink. During dinnertime, Hibiscus also offers a new and exciting soup of the day. The entire meal was extremely filling and delicious, and I couldn’t resist the fudgey brownie for dessert. I felt justified in my decision since it is made with chickpea flour. “This was great!” my dad exclaimed, after enjoying his buckwheat crepe with tomatoes, basil, and cheese. Read More

Discount Profile: Hibiscus

It’s always sad when one of our student interns leave TVA. But, this is also an excuse to go out for a celebratory meal! TVA staff did just that back in April and it was delicious, satisfying and affordable. Close to the TVA office in Kensington Market, Hibiscus is a small and quaint café, complete with park benches for seats at some tables! It was difficult for me to decide which of the many sweet and savoury crepes to order, but I decided to turn down the classic apple and cinnamon and opt for a tomato, basil and mushroom crepe with daiya cheese. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and turned out to be huge! The crepe was warm, the cheese melted and overall it was simply delicious. My three colleagues all ordered the soup and salad combo, which vegetarian discount card holders get 10% off! Autumn says of her dish “The soup and salad combo at Hibiscus is always a delicious surprise. I enjoyed a mix of vegetables, beans, tofu, nuts and grains with a warm bowl of squash soup. Nutritious and delicious!” Of course, no meal is complete without dessert and when it comes… Read More
