Find Vegan Ice Cream Shops in the GTA

Care of Carla Williams Updated July 2018 Is vegan “ice cream” even ice cream? Arguably (and by that we mean technically), it is not! The important thing is we’ve got a list of local spots where you’ll find the good stuff: delicious, dairy-free concoctions that will satisfy any ice cream lover’s craving for cool. Top Picks Bunner’s Bakeshop 244 Augusta Ave. 647-350 2975  bunners.ca This all-vegan and gluten-free bake shop has two locations in Toronto but their soft serve ice cream is only available at their Kensington Market location – 244 Augusta Ave, during summer months. Enjoy the classics: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Swirl in a cone or paired with a baked treat. See their complete listing on veg.ca Cosmic Treats 207 Augusta Avenue 647-352-2207 cosmictreats.ca Toronto’s kid-friendly vegan restaurant, dessert bar, ice cream parlour and candy shop is located in the heart of Kensington Market. Perks of the Job

Care of Emily Thompson, Festival and Events Coordinator It was just over six weeks ago that I arrived at the charming second floor office of the Toronto Vegetarian Association, ready to embark on my journey as their new Festival and Events Coordinator. I approached my desk to find an array of items welcoming me to the organization, including a delicious looking cupcake right in front of my eyes. I quickly learned that Barbi, our Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator, has a hidden talent in the realm of vegan baked goods, among other things. This was a dangerous finding especially as we were gearing up for the Totally Fabulous Vegan Bake-Off that both of us had signed up to be home-bakers for… Of course we were going to bring our test batches into the office! I have been lucky to work for companies and organizations revolving around good, healthy food (most of the time) and the TVA is no exception. The even better thing about it is the fact that absolutely everything I get to taste is vegan! Now I don’t want to make you jealous, but here’s just a few of the things I’ve had the opportunity… Read More

A Guide to Vegan Ice Cream in Toronto’s Veg Village

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator The latest Veg Out: Toronto’s Vegetarian Podcast gave a fabulous rundown of the increasing vegan options for ice cream around the GTA. With so many options to choose from, it’s hard to decide where to go when you feel like treating yourself to something cold and creamy. Imagine what it’s like for me, famous for my sweet tooth, working just around the corner from what’s been dubbed “veg village”, where there are FIVE places serving up vegan ice cream all within a couple blocks of each other. One might wonder how they can all stay in business at the same time. Isn’t the vegan ice cream market saturated in Kensington? But once you take a closer look, you’ll realize that each place offers something unique and special, making them all worth a visit this summer. I’ve recently designated Thursday as my Veg Village treat day, so that I can make sure I try them all before fall rolls around. Here’s a little guide to what distinguishes these great options from one another. Cosmic Treats: Anyone who thinks vegans are depriving themselves has clearly never stepped into this retro style diner… Read More

Toronto’s Veg Village

By Moreen Murray, TVA member and volunteer At Barbi’s request and in the spirit of her guide to Vegan Alley about Bloor West, I am following up with my own little guide to what my husband and I call the Veg Village…Kensington Market. A popular spot for tourists and locals alike, we consider it our “supermarket” – where we go to get fresh fruits and vegetables and everything we need to make delicious vegan meals. After working up an appetite shopping, it’s great to have somewhere to stop and let someone else do the cooking. When we travel it’s not often you have the convenience of many veg restaurants in such a small area without having to travel partway across the city. The only example I am able to come up with is perhaps on the Upper West Side of New York City, on Columbus and Broadway avenues. Approaching the market from our home base of King and Bathurst we usually enter off Dundas at Denison and one of our favourite spots on the corner is… GREENS VEGETARIAN – 638 Dundas Street West. **Greens gives TVA members 10% off We started going here during previous ownership and now… Read More

Changing Seasons But Not Desserts

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator Six months ago, we introduced you to a new staff team at the Toronto Vegetarian Association. With the end of the summer, the TVA is once again going through a transition. Our two summer assistants, Charlotte and Kara, have now completed their contracts, and the office has become a much quieter place (which also means I no longer have enough people around for bringing in weekly batches of baked goods to share; sad face). David, our Executive Director, has just returned from paternity leave, which means our Interim General Manager Lucas, is completing his contract as well. Never ones to pass up an excuse to go out for a celebratory meal at one of Toronto’s many amazing vegan restaurants, the current TVA staff team decided to visit the newly opened Cosmic Treats in Kensington Market to thank Lucas for his great work over the past 6 months and to welcome back David to the office. Before stepping out of Cosmic Treats after our meal I literally uttered “my life just got so much better”, and I meant it. I was literally giddy with excitement like a kid in a candy store, except that I… Read More

Vegetarian Directory Updates – September 2015

New Vegan Café & Bar   Grey Tiger (1190 Bloor St. W., 416-838-5730), a new vegetarian café and bar, is now open in Bloordale Village! At 1190 Bloor St., just west of Dufferin, Grey Tiger celebrated their grand opening on August 21st. “By day we are a cozy refuge from the daily grind, providing coffee, loose-leaf tea, vegan brick toast and other house-made snacks. By night we amplify the cozy with a little bit of romance to set the scene for delicious cocktails, craft beer, fine spirits and other libations alongside tasty vegan bar snacks. “ If you’re wondering what “brick toast” is, it’s a vegan version of Hokkaido Milk Bread- a delicious, sweet and fluffy thick-sliced bread. In this case, it’s served with delicious toppings such as peanut butter, bananas, and coconut bacon, or a savoury mushroom spread, with a variety of toppings to come. The menu is still being developed, so stop by Grey Tiger to see what’s new, and find Grey Tiger on Facebook and Twitter for more updates. “This is a labour of love. We truly care about the details – and we want you to really enjoy yourself. Read More
