New Vegan Restaurants   Rosalinda (133 Richmond St. W., 416-368-8382, www.instagram.com/rosalindarestaurant/) is a huge vegan Mexican restaurant coming to the Financial District this spring! The 136-seat Mexican joint is the project of Max Rimaldi, Jamie Cook and Grant van Gameren — a trio of Toronto restaurateurs known for the massively successful Pizzeria Libretto and Enoteca Sociale, as well as Bar Isabel, Bar Raval and Tennessee Tavern. Rosalinda’s entirely plant-based menu will focus on Mexican and Baja flavours and will feature dishes like jackfruit pibil, Tijuana-style broccoli, spicy carrots in mole, and Japanese eggplant marinated in salsa macha. “The Toronto dining scene has evolved so much since we first started talking about this concept,” said Cook in the press release. “We’re excited to be opening Rosalinda at a time when people are more open than ever to incorporating meatless dining into their lives.” Follow Rosalinda on Instagram to stay up to date on the grand opening!   Planted (225 John St. S., Unit 1, Hamilton, 289-389-6676, www.plantedin.ca) is a… Read More

Welcome to Toronto’s Vegan Alley

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor & Volunteer Resources Coordinator When my partner and I are planning a visit to a new city, it usually goes a little bit like this: Create a Google earth map of all the vegetarian restaurants we want to go to, then look up hotels near the biggest concentration. More often than not, this is relatively easy, with several must-visit restaurants clustered in one neighbourhood. I imagine this would be somewhat difficult for people visiting Toronto. It seems that the largest concentration of vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurants, bakeries and cafes is emerging not in any sort of tourist hot spot with hotels and attractions nearby, but instead it’s happening off the beaten path in the west end of the city, where accommodations are few and far between (or maybe non-existent?). Well, move over Kensington Market! Someone recently referred to the stretch of Bloor Street between Christie and Lansdowne as “Vegan Alley”, and I’ve made it my mission to make this phrase catch on. When I imagine myself as a newbie tourist in Toronto, I envision being overwhelmed by the vegan options in this neck of the woods and wishing there were a nice Hampton Inn & Suites nearby… Read More

Picnic in a Park

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator The TVA office can be a hectic and stressful place leading up to the Veg Food Fest, no doubt. Some days the office is abuzz with the chatter of meetings and volunteers helping out, and some days we are each zeroed in on our computers not uttering a word as we try to block out all distractions, forgetting to even eat lunch or go to the bathroom (well ok…we all know it’s a bit of a stretch that I would forget to eat lunch, but others do). But no matter what unexpected twists and turns come our way or how much work piles up, I always feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work at TVA and enjoy all the pleasures it brings. Like this week, when our manager Lucas and President Diane surprised us all with a staff appreciation picnic at Christie Pits Park! Can you guess based on the location what amazing culinary delights we were treated to? None other than Apiecalypse Now’s incredible pizza, mozzarella sticks and donuts. It was the perfect destination for a relaxing afternoon as we got ready to say goodbye to our Directory Assistant… Read More
