VEDTalks: The Activators / Vegan Market & Art Show

September 22, 2019 @ 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Something familiar…but a little bit different. “VEDTalks…Seeds Worth Planting”. Based on the well-known TEDTalks…but with a bright-green vegan twist! This segment: THE ACTIVATORS. Live-streaming via Ray Kowalchuk of JaneUnchainedCanada.

Plant-Based (R)evolution and Calling All Vegans are delighted to be hosting the second instalment in a series of presentations meant to inform, motivate, inspire, and provoke thought.

No vegan event would be complete without food, glorious food! Bring your appetite as well as containers/plates/utensils for delicious free samples and take-home purchases from the pop-up marketplace. And to further delight your senses, attendees can feast their eyes on the works of art on display being exhibited by a number of vegan artists, with some pieces available for purchase.

Please meet our wonderful VEDTalkers. All speakers will be available for a panel discussion after the presentation to clarify, amplify, and fortify their talks.

FOAD HP, cerebral Toronto comedian and activist, will school us on the power of humour and using it to deliver the often unpalatable vegan message with that little bit of sugar to help the medicine go down…and to prove to the world that (most) vegans are not, in fact, humourless!
@foadhp

JENNY MCQUEEN, long-time animal activist, will share with us how FurFree Toronto is forming a coalition of individuals, grassroots organizations, and forward-thinking mainstream companies working towards following in the footsteps of other cities and countries around the world that have successfully banned fur in their municipalities. We will also be putting into action some of what we learn in this presentation.

DARREN CHANG, Toronto activist and one of the liberators of four sweet birds from a local chicken slaughterhouse, is putting the squeeeeeze on Canada Goose through a carefully crafted and systematic pressure campaign. Learn more about applying pressure to corporate weak links and the effectiveness of such initiatives in general, as well as the specific ways in which these tactics are being applied to cruel Canada Goose and its head honcho, Dani Reiss. It is critical that we update and sharpen our skills when standing up for animals to make us more effective activists.

THE ARTIST-ARTISTS:

TWYLA FRANCOIS has been a farmed animal cruelty investigator for over a decade. Her work has been the focus of numerous documentaries and has led to the closure of facilities, animal cruelty convictions, rescues of abused and neglected farmed animals, and opening the hearts and minds of many to the power of their food choices to create a kinder world. Recognizing that not everyone will be reached by graphic footage and photos, Twyla’s art seeks to raise awareness on the plight of today’s farmed animals in a more gentle, but hopefully equally compelling, way.
