Discount Profile: Free Times Cafe

How silly that I work so close to Free Times Cafe yet hadn’t in all these years taken the time to check out the amazing vegetarian food they have to offer. I suppose that is what Veggielicious is all about – inspiring people to try new restaurants that serve great vegetarian options. During Veggielicious I made it out to Free Times Cafe twice and both times I was absolutely floored by how delicious the food was. On day one, I had a delicious vegan shepard’s pie that came with soft, whole grain bread and a salad filled with tomatoes and red onions and a nice balsamic vinaigrette. The shepard’s pie was filled with bulgar, corn and carrots and was comfort food at it’s best. On day two, I had a mediterranean wrap packed with eggplant, hummus and other veggies, along with a side of ginger and sweet potato soup. It was perfect for one of the first cold days of winter. When it’s not Veggielicious, there’s still plenty of vegetarian options on Free Times Cafe’s menu, (including their house made veggie burger and a great falafel plate) that TVA members can take 15% off of with the Toronto… Read More

Pizza with a Twist

By Autumn Ladoucer, Past Communications Intern Compared with other pizza restaurants, Pizza Rustica was one of the best I’ve ever eaten at when it comes to vegan fare. Barbi and I experienced Pizza Rustica for the first time this past Monday. The menu was very impressive. There are tons of options for vegans, including a whole vegetarian pizza menu where Daiya cheese can be used instead of cow cheese. The pizza we found most intriguing was the “Mexicana”, which Pizza Rustica describes as, “Chipotle pesto sauce, vegan ground “meat”, Daiya mozzarella and pepper jack cheddar, corn, hot peppers, organic back beans and green onions. Topped with fresh avocados and cilantro.” It was a thin-crust pizza, loaded with toppings, perfect for one.  The hot peppers added a great bite to the meal, although this tasted more like Mexican food than pizza and fresh toppings gave the pizza more of a cold feel. If you are looking to bite into a warm, hearty slice of traditional pizza I would suggest trying one of their other offerings. We also ordered the “Vegan Bolognese” pasta. Pizza Rustica describes it as, “Seasoned organic vegan ground”meat” & tomato sauce.  Tossed with gluten free quinoa &… Read More

Savoury Meals That Are Oh-So Sweet

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator Asian tacos and sandwich, and sweet potato balls from Gainesville’s Lunchbox I recently returned from a week of indulgence in Tampa and Gainesville, Florida. We had some really delicious food in Tampa, but I must say Gainesville is such a surprising mecca for vegan food it is a city worth taking a vacation to for that reason alone. My week consisted of custom cupcakes from Sakara Sweets (pick your cake, frosting, filling and topping), vegan soft serve from a corner convenience store, a full-out feast of Jamaican goodness from Reggae Shack, tempeh burritos from El Indio (a drive-in Mexican place), raspberry-basil-lemon soda and Asian tacos from the outdoor walk-up Lunchbox, fried brussel sprouts and sweet corn balls from a food truck, and yes, an ice cream sundae for breakfast topped with vegan whipped cream, hot fudge sauce and Fudgeeo cookies from Karma Cream. It was all rather delicious but needless to say when I returned home, I needed a serious cleanse (and maybe a few new pairs of pants). To quote a friend as we waited for our flights to depart home, “I have such a craving for steamed broccoli!” would… Read More

Embrace Your Inner Hippy Granola Veggie

By Barbi Lazarus, Donor and Volunteer Resources Coordinator As a form of vegetarian outreach and in an attempt to convert meat-eaters to plant-eaters, us veggies are eager to dispel myths about bland, vegetarian food. We’ve probably all said more than once in our lives “vegetarians don’t just eat granola and salad!”. The last Toronto Veg Blog post shows that plant-based food knows no limits and that certainly, granola and salad are no longer required fare for vegetarians. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not shy about indulging in all the vegan versions of classic comfort food and sweet desserts that are abundant these days. But I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m vegan and yes, I love granola. It’s quick to whip up in a bowl and pop in the oven, ready to bring along wherever and whenever the next day. It’s a great snack, or if you make one filled with enough nuts and seeds, it can even be filling enough for lunch with a side of fruit and veggies. It’s the perfect food to bring along on vacation, to snack on the plane, or to bring on hikes or other day trips where there… Read More
