Discount Profile: Kensington Natural Bakery

After the 2010 TVA annual general meeting a few of us decided to grab a bite to eat, so we went old school on Bloor and reconnected with Kensington Natural Bakery & Café (460 Bloor Street West, 416-534-1294). Maybe one of our readers can correct us, but this might just be the oldest vegetarian eatery in Toronto, and while it can feel a little like you’re stepping in a time machine when you enter, the good news is that this includes the prices. KNB (as the cool kids call it) features a meal special in the back where you can choose three items from a wide range of vegan and vegetarian options, which with soup comes to only $5.99. And of course, your Toronto Veg Card gives you an additional 10% savings. While they are not in Kensington, they are a bakery! You can buy whole pies or just a slice, as well as cookies, date squares, cupcakes, and a wide range of other breads and baked goods. One quick warning, though with their prices this shouldn’t be an issue: while Kensington Natural Bakery accepts the Toronto Veg Card, they… Read More

Discount Profile: Moonbean Coffee Company

Care of Terri Coles It’s hard to overstate the value of a great coffee shop — it’s a source for caffeine, clearly, but also for delicious treats and perhaps more importantly, relaxation and chatting with friends. Moonbean in Kensington Market has all this covered. It’s not as fancy, inside or out, as some coffee shops in the city, but it more than makes up for that by being cozy and welcoming. The drink menu at Moonbean is huge and offers classic hot choices along with options like smoothies. You can have the drinks made with soy milk or almond milk — I love the hot chocolate with almond milk, myself. Moonbean also has a great selection of treats, including vegan and gluten-free options; it’s nice to know that you can go there for a quick snack as well as a beverage. And if you really enjoy Moonbean’s coffee, you can buy some beans to go (Toronto Veg Card holders get a discount on their coffee beans!). It may have gotten a bit too cool for the front patio, but there’s still plenty of seating inside. Discount: 10% off coffee beans with the Toronto… Read More

Discount Profile: Fresh

Care of Terri Coles Fresh is a Toronto landmark at this point. They were on the vegetarian train before a lot of other restaurants caught on, and their concept has been copied endless times. It’s still worth coming to the original source though; I’ve yet to have a juice or smoothie in the city that beats the ones you can get at Fresh. My favourite is Singing Grasshopper, and that’s the one I got with my meal on my most recent visit to Fresh for a friend’s birthday. We arrived at 5:30 pm on a Friday and had no trouble getting a table for four, but be prepared to wait if you go during peak times. Fresh on Bloor provides a great atmosphere for a relaxed dinner with friends, with a nice amount of light coming in from the big window facing Bloor Street. The spot is busy but not cramped, and you can still hold a conversation without any difficulty. We really dug in for the birthday meal — each of us got one of Fresh’s signature bowls, including Buddha, Beach and Warrior. And then there were the smoothies, of course. I love that Fresh is now offering two vegan… Read More

Discount Profile: Greens Vegetarian Restaurant

Photo care of Prairie Vegan We often think we need to choose between affordable prices and a luxurious atmosphere when it comes to dining. But not at Greens Vegetarian Restaurant. Walking into Greens for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised at the very nice decor: padded white booths, a beautiful stone wall and dark tables. But the next surprise was even greater! The prices at this place are incredibly low for the portions you get: a big bowl of soup for only $2.99, and main dishes in the $7-$10 range (but again, we’re talking generous portions sizes!). If you’re a member of the Toronto Vegetarian Association and have a Toronto Veg Card your bill will be even more of a shocker, as card holders get an additional 10% off. But that doesn’t mean they are skimping on quality. We ordered a new dish on the menu, sweet n’ spicy “chicken”, which came coated in a sticky, sweet and perfectly spiced sauce. We also thoroughly enjoyed a generous bowl of wonton soup and an enormous noodle dish dazzled with various faux meat pieces and some veggies too. All dishes were delicious and we got to leave with leftovers. Discount:… Read More

Discount Profile: Vegetarian Haven

Care of Terri Coles This review almost didn’t happen. My friend and I stopped by Vegetarian Haven on a Saturday evening. Baldwin Street is an unassuming side street with surprisingly cool options for food and shopping, and apparently Vegetarian Haven is something of a hidden treasure. We managed to snag a table for two, but everyone who came in after us was informed there would be a wait — and they all opted to get in line rather than go elsewhere. This restaurant offers plenty of reasons to put your name on the list for a table. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, but also elegant — it’s a great spot for a date. But the portions are generous and the prices are great, and most importantly the food is top notch. I got the Morrocan pad Thai, a nice twist on a favourite Toronto dish, and my friend enjoyed his spicy Bali stir-fry noodles. The noodles are made fresh in Toronto every day. I particularly appreciated that the menu indicates which dishes are wheat-free, and which others can be made that way. The fresh mint and ginger teas were definitely nice on a cold evening, and the… Read More

Discount Profile: M and B Yummy

Care of Chris Ekbatani A group of vegans chose M & B Yummy as our spot for a meetup back in January. That Friday night was a delightful experience. I must say that this restaurant is one of Toronto’s best kept veggie secrets! The authentic African cuisine is bound to turn one’s palate on, and if your experience with the hostess and wait staff is anything like mine, then you will be sure to enjoy every moment of your interaction in that space. When I arrived it was a chilly winter evening, the resto was warm with pleasant lighting, comfy seating, and a nice hot tea served fresh for me. There are so many savoury dishes to try, but we were lucky to have several already prepared, and soon after getting there, dinner was served. The atmosphere of the place was just vibrant, and even those not so keen on spicy foods can appreciate the genuine Ethiopian tastes with every bite. It was my first time there but most certainly not the last! Check out this piping hot spot on Queen West and you’ll be sure to take pleasure in their plant-based menu, desserts to die for, and… Read More

Discount Profile: Cruda Cafe

Care of Angela Del Buono If you’ve never been to the St. Lawrence Market, it can be a bustling and often overwhelming place. Vegetarians are advised to stick to the lower level and forgo the sight of carcasses. But once you reach the lower level you can enjoy organic produce and bulk foods at Dominos, beans and rice at Rubes, and organic, hand-made tofu at Ying Ying, but don’t head home yet.. the best is still to come. In the North-East corner you’ll find Cruda Cafe, an all vegan & raw cafe that will dazzle your palate. They offer juices & smoothies, Rawraps  (my favourite of which is the Sundried Tomato Wrap; seasonal veggies, organic raw pate, avocado and sunflower sprouts), salads and entrees like Sweet Potato Mesquite Sandwich (slices of their dehydrated bread, homemade guacamole, seasonal veggies, homemade vegan kombucha cheese.) Don’t forget dessert! So many treats, my favourite of which is the pictured Mint Nainamo Bar. Head down Saturday morning for brunch items. Seating is food-court style with lots of great people watching. Use your Toronto Veg Card for 10% off everything, including their Un-Cooking Classes. Discount: 10% off with the Toronto… Read More

Discount Profile: Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine

Care of Marilyn Lazarus A short 20 minute drive up the Don Valley from downtown Toronto, you will find Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine, a Japanese and Thai restaurant. The air-conditioned restaurant is decorated in the typical Japanese style. Very clean and modern, with a few tatami rooms along one wall. There is also a sushi bar where you can watch your sushi being prepared. Upon entering, we were seated immediately, and hot green tea was served while we studied the menu. Now for the food. First, we had a very nicely presented plate of six california rolls and an order of salmon sushi. The fake “salmon” slices looked just like real salmon and the texture and taste was almost identical. I actually had to ask to be sure that is wasn’t real fish. All their “seafood” is vegetarian. Next, came the Veggie “Chicken” Teriyaki ($13.99). Tender, juicy morsels of “chicken” served on a sizzling hot plate, steaming and absolutely delicious. Then, for a nice change, we ordered a Thai Basil “Chicken” dish. This is a must try: a beautiful presentation with just the right amount of spiciness (we asked for medium spicy) which… Read More

Discount Profile: Sweets from the Earth

Care of Angela Del Buono Sweets From The Earth has been doing delicious, beautiful work consistently for many years. You may have noticed their goodies in big chains ilke Metro, Sobeys and Rexall, in natural food stores like The Big Carrot and Baldwin Naturals, and at restaurants like Fresh and Loving Hut. BUT did you know you can put together a custom order and pick it up at their bakery in the Junction? Loaves, cheesecakes, 7” & 10” cakes, cake pans, cookies, essentially all products listed on the website… you can get it super fresh. The discount also applies to special orders. I called in the morning and spoke with Lisa O (also a famed TVA volunteer), and asked her to put together a sample pack of cupcakes for pick up late in the afternoon. When I came by, Lisa headed into the bakery and I was so pleased to get three of the August monthly special cupcakes, including a S’mores cupcake! That’s right! Vegan marshmallow, spelt graham crumbs and chocolate. Also in my pack were the chocolate-raspberry, coconut, strawberry filled, lavender chocolate and reliable vanilla. It’s so great to get a variety… Read More

Discount Profile: Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurant

With their prices already low in exchange for massive portions, it’s hard to imagine that vegetarian discount card holders now get an additional 10% off their meal! Even if you live downtown, it’s worth making the trip to Richmond Hill/Markham for a meal out at Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurant. Our first dish, rice and mixed vegetables, may not sound like anything fancy, but the variety of mushrooms and leafy greens was excellent and the flavor was delicious. The “seafood” and bean curd on hot plate came to the table sizzling and was fantastic and unique! I always get a plate of mixed gluten when I dine here and this meal was no exception. It comes with a variety of flavours: sweet ‘n sour, curry, mock duck, BBQ and more. Some varieties are soft and gooey, while others are more chewy, but each one is mouthwatering and I can never get enough. But whatever you do, don’t miss out on the veggie lemon chicken dish! The gooey, sugary coating surrounding the soft gluten-based “chicken” will melt in your mouth and bring you back for more. Discount: 10% (not on holidays or on 1st and 13th of each… Read More
