Discount Profile: Hibiscus Restaurant

Hibiscus is a cozy restaurant tucked into Augusta Street in Kensington Market. While they offer delicious crepes (sweet and savoury!) and house-made ice cream; the item that members get for a discount is the soup and salad combo. The soup arrives in a mug, and it’s super cute! The flavour changes daily and seasonally. The day we visited it was sweet potato coconut. I’m not usually a fan of sweet potato, but I really enjoyed this soup, the coconut gave it a nice creaminess and it was pleasantly thick. The salad comes with a raw cracker, which is delicious on its own, but I also liked dipping it in the soup. Speaking of the salad–it’s gigantic! Hibiscus says that there are 42 ingredients in the salad, and I can definitely say that it’s not an everyday salad. Mine came with no kelp — I don’t like it– but the salad was flavourful, packed, and really more like a bowl than a salad with all the different ingredients. My favourite was the tofu, and the berries–they were so sweet!   We followed up this healthy plant-based lunch with a scoop of their house-made ice cream; the flavour… Read More

August Veg Guide Updates!

It’s August! We’re one month out from Veg Food Fest, but have some great new things being served up in Toronto to hold you over until then! JUST Egg The most exciting thing that I have to report on this month is the launch of JUST Egg in Canada! We know that right now it’s available at most Tim Horton’s in Kitchener/Waterloo, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan and we hope that this is a sign of more locations to come. Order a “plant-based omelette” with no cheese, and enjoy!   Avelo 51 St Nicholas St. This new venture from the great minds that brought you Awai, and Away Kitchen & Cafe will be open soon in a cozy converted home just a short walk from either Yonge and Bloor or Yorkville. Discount Profile: Virtuous Pie

Virtuous Pie is a popular pizza restaurant located in Little Italy. There are several locations of this all-vegan restaurant on the West Coast, but Toronto is the first location further east. Recently they joined the Veg Card program, and they now offer TVA members 10% off! I visited recently for supper with my mother, tried a bunch of dishes, and did not leave disappointed! The day that my mother and I visited was the first day that they started offering table service in the restaurant, so if you’ve visited before; you don’t need to order at the counter anymore! We ordered local beers, garlic knots and a small pasta salad while we decided which of the many pizzas we’d be trying.   The garlic knots came with cheese on top, and a generous ranch dipping sauce. The knots made it both crispy and soft, and we devoured them so quickly!  The pasta salad was full of vegetables, with large chunks of artichoke, sun-dried tomatoes, and asparagus. It reminded me of the Mediterranean pasta salad I used to order from grocery stores in my omnivore days, but a million times better. We couldn’t… Read More
