Suburbanites have long been enjoying Tenon Vegetarian Cuisine in Markham, and now us city folk can enjoy their delicious food too! The owners have opened a new, all-vegan location on Bloor Street, between Bathurst and Spadina, that actually serves plenty more than just sushi!

My partner and I started with two appetizers. The Chick’n Karaage are little breaded and fried “chicken” nuggets, that reminded me of Zoglos that I ate back in the day. To continue with the fried theme, we also ordered the Tao-Hu Dan, four deep-fried pieces of tofu that are stuffed with cilantro and cucumber. I loved the contrast of the crispy, fried tofu and the fresh, crunchy greens and veggies!

As I mentioned, their menu is enormous and includes soups, noodles, fried rice dishes, and Thai specialties like curries, including many with mock meats such as “duck” or “beef.” But given the name of the restaurant, we thought we should take the opportunity to try out a few of the many sushis and special rolls they are known for.

We ordered the Caterpillar Roll, the Tenon Special, and the Montreal Roll. Some of them were creamy with a vegan mayo, some were crunchy with veggie shrimp and crab meat. All were generous portions and DELICIOUS.

I’ll have to go back because there were literally dozens of sushi and rolls to choose from, and I’m eager to dive into some of their other non-sushi dishes too!
