Steppin’ to the Beet: TVA’s Virtual Fitness Challenge

July 13, 2020

Run, walk, or bike 5k, 10k, a half or full marathon, or a duathlon distance of your choice, to raise funds for the Toronto Vegetarian Association in celebration of World Vegetarian Day!

When does my run/walk/bike take place?
World Vegetarian Day is Thursday, October 1, but you can pick any day from Saturday, September 19 to Saturday, October 3 to complete your personal fitness challenge.

What does a virtual fitness challenge mean? Are we doing this together, in person?

You will complete your fitness challenge on your own, on the day of your choice, although of course you may have one or two friends or family members who are also interested in signing up for the same challenge and you could complete it together!

But don’t worry, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to meet and chat with others who are completing the challenge throughout the summer, both in person and online. See more details below!

Where does my fitness challenge take place?

Once again, this is up to you! You could simply step outside your home for a 5k walk, or perhaps you have a trail or route you’ve always dreamed of doing, like a bike ride along the waterfront trail from start to finish.

What are the perks for being part of the challenge?

All team members receive a special commemorative TVA magnet in celebration of our 75th anniversary this year, as well as a back issue of VegNews Magazine and a small packet of Profi’s Cookies n Cream Protein Powder.

You will also be invited to team events throughout the summer, such as a socially-distanced picnic in a Toronto park, a Zoom webinar from a veg fitness expert to provide training tips, virtual team training days where we’ll chat online via Zoom after completing a training run/walk/bike ride, and another socially-distanced picnic in a Toronto park after everyone has completed their challenge. More details coming soon!

You will also receive bi-weekly emails of support all summer to encourage and help you to reach both your fundraising and fitness goals, and you will be invited to join a private Facebook group where you can chat with others taking part in the challenge.

Here’s what past Toronto Veg Team members have said about their experience being part of the challenge:

“I was thrilled with the amount of resources, support (and fun!) I received in running with the Toronto Vegetarian Team. This was my first 10k. I had a lot to learn – both in running and in successfully fundraising for a cause near and dear to my heart. But I felt well prepared with the amazing help of TVA along the way. Still learning and hope to participate again! Plant powered, for life!”

“I had a blast doing my first ever 5K walk.  From the fundraising I did, to talking to people about making better and healthier eating choices, to motivating myself to get in better shape to do the 5K walk, to reading your encouraging and supportive emails.  I’m really proud of myself for having done this, and I consider it a personal victory.”

“This walk is an event I look forward to for months. I also enjoy fundraising and fortunately I have a loyal group of friends who do not tire of supporting the cause year after year. My family has always been very supportive.”
