July Veg Guide Updates

edit

June 28, 2019

Happy summer! There is lots to talk about this month in the Veg Guide updates, so we’ll get right to it!

New Vegan Businesses

mugi
739 Bathurst Street.

This entirely plant-based Thai restaurant at Bathurst and Bloor makes traditional Thai dishes from scratch with wholesome ingredients. They make their own tempeh, kimchi, and fish sauce alternatives and their meals are fresh and flavourful! Mugi is mostly takeaway, with a small counter for eating in the restaurant.

New Locations of Popular Favourites

Almond Butterfly
792 Dundas Street West

Almond Butterfly makes awesome gluten-free baked goods, with plenty of vegan options and at their new location on Dundas you can also enjoy brunch in addition to their usual grab and go options! Choose from vegan tacos, banana crepes, or caesar salad, order a mimosa and stay awhile!

Places with Great Vegan Options

These places aren’t all necessarily new options, but they are good options we’ve been made aware of recently! It’s great how many places are now offering delicious vegan food!

Bagel Nash
81 Gerry Fitzgerald Dr.

In addition to regularly offering vegan soups, Bagel Nash now has vegan cream cheese and Beyond Meat sausages to top their delicious bagels. They have a bakery and an in house cafe for ordering breakfast or lunch, and it’s a great option in an area without a lot for vegans!

Beertown

With locations in Cambridge, Burlington, London and Waterloo and soon to open in Toronto, Barrie, Oakville and more, Beertown is a solid choice for vegans, with a separate menu of options including vegan chick’n tacos, nachos, Caesar salad and more. PLUS the Burlington location has a vegan brunch menu that looks awesome!

East of Brunswick
720 Spadina Ave

If you’re looking for a comfy pub with a big patio and vegan options near U of T, East of Brunswick surprised me lately with their new vegan menu! Options include the Beyond Burger; not surprisingly, but they have a vegan cheesesteak and a vegan Moroccan pie as well! Definitely worth a visit.

Pizza Pizza

Pizza Pizza has had vegan cheese from Violife for a while, but they recently upped their game and are now offering two types of veggie meats as well! Next time you order, add the veggie pepperoni from Yves, or the chorizo crumble care of Field Roast, and enjoy!

Tim Hortons

It may have been hard to miss the billboards, bus signs, and giant TV ads in Yonge and Dundas Square about Tim Hortons introducing Beyond Sausage to its breakfast options, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention it here. Order the Beyond Sausage Lettuce Tomato for the vegan option, and if you’d like my protip; order a hashbrown with ketchup to put on the sandwich as well—it’s delicious!

New Additions to the Discount Program

Copper Branch
410 Bathurst Street

The newest Toronto location of Copper Branch now offers TVA members 10% off!

Flower Lantern
2437 Finch Ave. W, Unit 1

Almost everything is vegan at this vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant, and now TVA members get 15% off!

Virtuous Pie
611 College Street

Get your pizza and garlic knot fix at this cozy restaurant on College. Now get 10% off too!

Sorry to See you Go

It is a sad month for restaurant closings, despite all of these great new options. In July we’ll be losing vegan community stalwart Vegetarian Haven, as well as the upscale Awai (though they are working on something new and exciting opening later this summer at Yonge & Bloor), and vegan bakery extraordinaire Through Being Cool. So go for one last meal or pizza bun while you still can; these places will be missed!
