Pure Love Smoothie Bar (399 John St., Burlington, 905-637-2700, www.lettucelovecafe.com) is a new smoothie bar brought to you by Lettuce Love Café in Burlington! Located right next door to Lettuce Love (how convenient!), Pure Love features freshly made smoothies, plus tons of superfood loaded treats. “We sell Superfood Smoothies and Bowls, and have a section for Grab n Go foods, like Chia Puddings, Soaked Oats, Raw Chocolates, Energy Bar and Balls, Salads, Dressings and more!” The Yoga Bliss smoothie with orange, banana, pineapple, coconut water, and shredded coconut, and the Wake Up smoothie with Almond milk, cold coffee, banana, dates, cocoa powder and almond butter. Planta (1221 Bay St., 647-348-7000, www.plantatoronto.com) is now open! The highly anticipated plant-based eatery is open as of mid-September for brunch, lunch and dinner. The menu features unique vegan cuisine, such as coconut ceviche (coconut is marinated in lime juice, chilis, and onion, topped with sliced avocado and smashed organic corn nuts, and date puree), cauliflower tots (cauliflower and potato topped with truffle soy milk and vegetable oil mayo and truffled nut “parmesan”), and Crab Cakes made with hearts of palm, warm spices, and served with an herb salad. In addition to an intricate menu, Planta has a beautiful interior that sets it apart, and makes it a memorable and unique dining experience. Souk Tabüle (494 Front St. E., 416-583-5914, www.tabule.ca) is now open! For months we’ve been updating you on the grand opening of Souk Tabule, Tabule Middle Eastern Cuisine’s third location in the newly developed Canary District. Souk Tabule features lots of tasty, veg-friendly mezza (starters), plates, sides, soups & salads, sandwiches/wraps, and desserts, as well as a large selection of specialty drinks, teas, & coffee, as well as lemonades, fresh juice, and craft sodas, available for dine in or takeout. Also in store is a market section (Souk means “market” in Arabic) with special blends of spices and little jars of the sumac and turmeric, cookbooks, as well as other special ingredients imported from Lebanon, like fig preserves, pickled peppers, and rose water. New Vegan & Veg Friendly Locations
Boon Burger (23 Quebec St., Guelph, 519-265-5758, www.boonburger.ca) has recently opened a brand new location in Guelph! Okay, so it’s not Toronto yet… but we’re thrilled to see such an amazing vegan restaurant expanding so quickly in Ontario! This new location serves up all the favourites of the Barrie and Burlington locations, which includes options like Chili Cheeze Fries, Pizzas, and a huge selection of the best veggie burgers around, which you can have made with one of four different patties. Spicy Ethiopian is a brand new Ethiopian food truck located in Toronto! Here’s the best part- the menu features a separate vegan section! There are six individual vegan dishes, plus a vegan platter (for just $10!), where you can try them all- simmered ground chickpea, stewed split peas, lentils, beetroot and potatoes, and fresh sauteed spinach.. All dishes served with choice of injera, rice, bread, or tortilla. Natural Ethiopian juices (made from fenugreek, sunflower seeds, flax, or barley) are also served. Buddha Chay (1784 Jane St., 647-346-5935) is a new vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant which opened earlier this year in North York. Located on Jane, just north of Lawrence, an underserved area for vegetarian and vegan options, Buddha Chay serves a huge selection of Vietnamesse specialties, including bahn mi, spring rolls, Vietnamese buns, and apparently they even use vegan fish sauce in their Pho! There are also many rice and noodle dishes, and many mock meat options. Buddha Chay doesn’t have much of an online presence yet, so check out the positive reviews on Yelp, as well as some shots of the menu.
Dai Bi Chay (2399 Cawthra Rd. #100, Mississauga, 905-306-9888, www.daibichaymississauga.com) is another vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant that recently opened in Mississauga. With a huge menu filled with Vietnamese classic dishes, including vermicelli, stir fry, and many mock meat options. A favourite order is the Tom Yum Hot Pot (pictured), which serves two for $25. “Dai Bi Chay serves fresh and tasty vegetarian Vietnamese dishes. Whether you’re a vegetarian or just love vegetables and eating clean, Dai Bi Chay offers something for you!” Dai Bi Chai offers online ordering for delivery and pick up. The Hearty Hooligan (email@example.com) is a new vegan eatery and bakery in the making, set to open in Hamilton this fall. Started by a couple with a passion for vegan food, The Hearty Hooligan has been offering catering and special orders for some time, but has plans to open a storefront in the coming months. “I am a baker who specializes in the sweeter side of things, such as specialty cakes and all kinds of varied indulgent goodies, while my fiancé bakes savoury items on top of making artisan cashew cheeses, soups, and many other hearty dishes.” Visit their Go Fund Me page to support their venture, and find them on Instagram for examples of the deliciousness to come!
