New Vegan & Vegan-friendly Locations
Planta (1221 Bay St.) is opening soon in Yorkville! In case you haven’t heard yet, Planta is a new vegan restaurant set to open this September in the old location of Pangea. While another vegan restaurant in Toronto may not be surprising news, this one will offer something unique. Planta will be an impressive 165-seat restaurant that will offer an internationally inspired cuisine, organic wines, and cocktails made from fresh-pressed juice, and the menus will be the creation of award-winning Chef David Lee of Nota Bene on Queen West. Chef David Lee and Chase Hospitality Group (the group behind four other popular Toronto restaurants) are partners in the opening of Planta, and say that Planta will offer daily lunch, dinner, possibly grab and go breakfast, as well as takeout. The word is that Planta will be open in time for TIFF (Sept. 8-18), which isn’t long to wait! Follow Planta on Instagram and Twitter for updates on the opening day.
The V Spot (12 Millers Lane, Dundas, 905-628-4545, www.thevspotdundas.com) is a new vegan restaurant that recently opened in Dundas, Ontario, just west of Hamilton. The V Spot offers a combination of classic comfort food with a healthy, nutrient-rich twist. The menu features starters, wraps, “power salads” (like a Classic Caesar with garlic dressing, sunflower and hemp seeds, rosemary croutons, and the option of “chick’n”), hearty bowls, and a delicious sounding list of coffees, teas, and smoothies. “We would like people to come and enjoy delicious food, with great people, in a relaxed environment. We hope you have a wonderful experience at The V Spot Cafe, and leave with a full stomach and a clear conscience.” Follow The V Spot on Instagram, and check out their website for more information and a complete menu.
Sorelle and Co. (1050 Rutherford Rd., Vaughan, 905-303-1073, www.sorelleandco.com) is a new vegan bakery that recently opened in Vaughan. What began with five sisters all plagued with food allergies and sensitivities, has become a gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, nut-free and preservative-free bakery creating sophisticated, beautiful baked goods, as well as a café serving soups, salads, paninis, coffee, and smoothies. “Sorelle and Co. takes a unique approach to food, mixing refined elegance with healthy, worry-free ingredients and a family-friendly style… everything on the menu can be shared by young and old alike, regardless of dietary restrictions. Sorelle is proud to offer a sophisticated take on healthy.” Visit the Sorelle and Co. website to place orders and view their menu, and follow on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates.
The Basil Box (3 locations in the GTA, www.thebasilbox.com) has recently opened a location at 351 Yonge St. in the Ryerson Student Learning Centre, and is soon to open one at Queen and Spadina (441 Queen St. W.) in November. Basil Box is a restaurant inspired by the markets of South East Asia, and provides a unique ordering, and dining experience. “The street markets of Thailand and Vietnam were the inspiration for Basil Box: a new restaurant where you can mix and match ingredients to build one of thousands of possible boxes. Start with a base of rice, noodles, or greens, and then add veggies, proteins, sauces and toppings in unique combinations that will have you both coming back for your favourites and experimenting with something new.” With a great selection of veggies, like roasted corn, peppers, sweet potatoes and edamame, as well as flavourful toppings and sauces, whether your vegan, gluten-free, or just love fresh, healthy food in a big bowl, you’ll have plenty of choices here! Visit the Basil Box website for more information, and follow on Facebook and Instagram.
Tori’s After Hours (2188 Queen St. E., 647-350-6500, www.torisbakeshop.ca), the restaurant and wine bar operated by Tori’s Bakeshop has closed its doors. But for all fans of Tori’s Bakeshop- don’t despair! The bakery is still up and running, and the new Canary District location at 430 Front St. E. is set to open this fall!
