If you’re already a TVA volunteer, make sure to check back for upcoming social, recognition and training events. We try to schedule some kind of training, social or recognition event each month.

General TVA Orientation and Meet ‘n Greet

These are casual drop-in sessions for new volunteers. No matter what volunteer role you’re interested in, take this opportunity to come in and meet with staff and/or other volunteers and chat to learn more about the organization and ask any questions you might have. We’d love to meet you and find out more about you and why you decided to get involved!

Table Training for Outreach Volunteers

These sessions are for people interested in doing vegetarian outreach with the Toronto Vegetarian Association. You’ll receive an overview of our mission, vision, values and programs so that you’re well-equipped to answer any questions you may receive about TVA. You’ll learn how to sell memberships and books, use our cash box, sign people up for the Veggie Challenge and more. New volunteers as well as those simply wanting a refresh of information are welcome.

Advanced Volunteer Training

This is an opportunity for those who have volunteered with TVA at least once to network with other volunteers and share knowledge, tips and best practices with each other about being effective at vegetarian outreach. Items discussed will include how to respond to difficult questions or reactions, how to start conversations with people, how to mentor and engage new volunteers and other topics depending on the experiences of those in attendance.

Veg Nutrition and Role Playing for Effective Outreach

New and experienced volunteers welcome! The old saying goes “practice makes perfect”. On the spot training is key to ensuring volunteers are comfortable approaching the public, asking them to make a commitment to plant-based living or to becoming a Toronto Vegetarian Association member, and answering common questions like “Where do you get your protein?” and “What about fish?”.

We’ll start by reviewing some common nutrition questions asked at outreach events, as well as best outreach practices compiled by expert activists and authors Bruce Friedrich and Matt Ball. Then we’ll give you the opportunity to role play with fellow volunteers and get practice answering commonly asked questions, making sure you arrive at your next tabling shift with confidence!
