Kids Workshop: Mexican Cooking & Latin Dancing for Ages 11-16

Special March Break Workshop for Kids 11-16 yrs!
In this special hands-on March Break workshop, Mexican Chef Erika Araujo will take your child on a tour of Mexican cuisine. Working alongside other junior chefs in the making, your child will learn how to prepare easy and delicious recipes that represent Mexico, learn about kitchen fundamentals, knife skills, proper sanitation, and much more!
Your little one will start the Mexican workshop with traditional guacamole & tortilla chips as a welcome snack, then dive into learning how to make the perfect Sopes & Tlacoyos. Working together in teams of two, your child will learn:
How to make the masa dough
How to form the sopes and tlacoyos
How to make the green tomatillo & jalapeño salsa
How to stuff the tlacoyo with the beans
How to clean, cook and prepare the cactus salad
How to assemble it all together
*Great for your little Vegetarian & Vegan!
A sit down lunch follows where your child will customize their own sopes and tlacoyos with plenty of toppings and garnishes.
And to top it all off, traditional Salsa Dance lessons with Mexican dance instructor Dali Perez will follow! Dali will teach your child about the cultural and historical background to Salsa Dancing, basic footwork and moves, some musicality to understand the music they are dancing to, plus throwing in a few Afro-Cuban moves, just to make them have some extra fun!
Parents are welcome to hang out and observe or drop off your child and take a break, it’s March Break after all! 😉

A little background:
Sopes are a traditional Mexican dish originating in the central and southern parts of Mexico. Like an extra thick tortilla, this circle of fried corn masa has raised, pinched sides to help it hold a wide variety of toppings like black beans, crumbled cheese, lettuce, onions, salsa verde and sour cream.
Tlacoyos are an oval-shaped pre-Hispanic Mexican dish also made from corn masa. Somewhat torpedo-shaped, they are fatter than tortillas and often stuffed with cooked ground beans, cheese or other ingredients before being fried or griddled. These tlacoyos will be served with nopales cactus salad and salsa.

ABOUT ERIKA ARAUJO
A trained nurse in Mexico who found her passion for Gastronomy once she migrated to Canada, Erika’s passion for cooking lead her to complete the Culinary program at Humber College. Since then she has been tirelessly promoting Mexican culture and cuisine through her brand Ixiim Toronto, at workshops and culinary events like TacoFest, The Depanneur, Soupalicious and the PanAm Games, where she was the only Mexican chef featured. Her latest adventure was with TVOkids program where she was a participant.
ABOUT DALI PEREZ
Born and raised in Mexico, Dali was exposed to different Latin dance styles throughout his youth. In 2009 he emigrated to Canada where he became even more captivated by the large Toronto Latin scene and started taking Salsa and Bachata lessons. It was during his time at Seneca College and as president of, and dance instructor for, the Latin Dance Club that he started developing his enthusiasm for teaching and sharing his cultural roots. His journey has since taken him to Thunder Bay where he helped create a thriving Latin Dance community, of which he is still a key part of. The trajectory of his life changed dramatically during his time in Cuba where he discovered his passion to pursue a professional dancer and instructor career. He has since learned from internationally acclaimed Cuban artists Alberto Valdes, Wilmer y Maria, Barbarito Ramos, Roly Maden, Yeni Molinet, Yanet Fuentes Torres, Jennyselt Galata, and Osvady, acquiring a vast knowledge of Latin dances such as Cuban salsa, Casino Rueda, Son, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, and Afro-Cuban dance styles to name just a few.
Every Month, Just Be Cooking invites cultural talents to lead fun, hands-on cooking workshops, sharing recipes from their heritage. A communal meal follows with LIVE traditional music.
