As we go to print, winter is prolonging its stay across the province and may be dampening your spirits - if you didn't have so much to look forward to in the coming month, namely:

Spring cleaning and vegan cookies invade the TVA Resource Centre! We're making space for new books by offering "oldies but goodies" cookbooks for $5 each or three for $10. Spend $20 or more and get a free sampling of cookies from the new arrived Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar.

Plus, TVA super-volunteer and lecturer Nimisha Raja is hosting a new cooking series - Health Starts Here. If you're looking for super-nutritious and delicious fare that is easy to prepare (you don't need any cooking skills to tackle these recipes), make sure you sign up for one or all of the classes. Response to her last cooking series, held in October/November 2009, was unanimous: people wanted more. Don't miss out.

This month, you can also entice your friends to take meat off their menu, at least on Mondays. Join TVA as it launches its first ever Meatless Monday campaign, which is already a huge success in the United States. A healthier nation awaits!

If cabin fever has you in its grip after months of winter, wouldn't it be great to get away for a while but not have to worry about finding veggie fare on the menu? A new company called Active Veggie Tours can help you do just that. Find out more, and get packing!

But if a trip to Starbucks is all you have time for at the moment, you're in for a special treat: the coffee giant is now offering vegan cookies.

All this along with our regular features, our animal of the month profile, and directory updates to keep you in the know about what's happening where on the veggie scene in Toronto and beyond. Happy reading!

Don't Miss These Upcoming Events!

The TVA Resource Centre March Madness Book Sell Off and Cookies Launch will happen on March 27th. Nimisha Raja takes you around the world with her Health Starts Here Cooking Series. Find out more in the TVA in Action section or on Facebook.

TVA Gets Ready to Join the Meatless Mondays Movement

By David Alexander

 MM

It’s about healthy eating with flavour, sustainability with flair, and compassion with a side of do-it-yourself kitchen magic. It’s an international campaign called Meatless Mondays and TVA will soon be signing on and looking to you for help in making it succeed and change the behaviour of people across the greater Toronto area and beyond.

Do you have a friend who’s proud of taking reusable bags to the grocery store and
driving a hybrid car, but who still packs on the carbon pounds with a meat-heavy
grocery list? Do you know someone who suffers from heart disease, Type-2 diabetes
or obesity who is looking to improve their health? Do your parents continually express
their love for animals, but continue to eat them daily?

If you said yes, then you’re in touch with an ideal candidate for the Meatless Mondays campaign. There are probably many people in your life who, for one reason or another, have the potential to really grasp the value of reducing their meat consumption, but just haven’t been exposed to the right tools to help them take that first step.

With our Meatless Mondays campaign, we'll connect people with the resources they need to find and prepare healthier, greener, more compassionate food alternatives. Over the next few months, we’ll launch this new initiative as part of our efforts to reach out to those who aren’t yet ready to jump on the veggie train seven days a week. Stay tuned to our website and future issues of eLifelines for more information, and in the meantime, check out twitter.com/meatlessTO.

Directory Updates

A new vegan bakery is set to open in Thornhill! We're still waiting for confirmation of the exact address, phone number and hours, but drive by Yonge and Centre and you'll see the big sign - VEGAN DANISH BAKERY Opening March 2nd. Stay tuned for more details.

Other new openings include Cruda Cafe, a raw, vegan cafe in the St. Lawrence Market (92 Front St E). They are a food court style establishment, in the lower level in the South market.

Stay in-the-know as more updates are announced on our directory updates page.

Vegetarian Diets Improve Coronary Arteries

A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology has concluded that a low-fat, vegetarian diet may help prevent heart attacks. The study looked at individuals who followed a low-fat, vegetarian diet, and also used a moderate exercise plan and stress management, and found that they measurably improved the function of their endothelium, which is the inner lining of arteries that is key to preventing heart attacks.

Dairy Myth Busted

The verdict is in - despite claims from the dairy industry that milk is necessary for strong bones and to prevent osteoperosis, a 12-year Harvard study of 78,000 women found that those who drank the most milk broke more bones than women who rarely drank milk. Evidence from around the world has also shown that in countries where dairy intake is highest, osteoporosis is actually the most prevalent. Read the full article from VegNews Magazine.

Starbucks Introduces Vegan Cookies

Several TVA supporters have alerted us to the fact that Starbucks Coffee is now selling Lucy’s cookies, which are completely vegan! Starbucks also sells a wide selection of other java related drinks with soy alternatives.

Animal Profile of the Month

Glorious Goats

Like other farm animals, goats are terribly understood. Get to know them and you’ll find they are intensely intelligent. Watch how a goat studies your face when he first meets you. You’ll know you’re getting the once-over from a seasoned investigator! A goat is looking for anything new and unfamiliar: a button will do, or a camera (hold on to yours tightly). If a goat eats your jacket, don’t take it personally. It’s just part of the check-up!

Goats are willing to eat almost anything. There have been stories of goats nibbling on tin cans and cardboard boxes. It’s not that they are terribly hungry, for the goats don’t actually eat the inedible stuff. It’s just that they are really curious about whatever is in their environment. Goats will chew on and taste just about anything resembling plant matter in order to decide whether it is good to eat.

Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species, and as such they go by a lot of different names. Female goats are referred to as does or nannies, while males are called bucks or billies. Goat offspring are kids.

Goats are perhaps best well known for their extreme coordination. They can climb and hold their balance in the most precarious places. According to Farm Sanctuary, a leading farm animal protection organization, “Cruelty cases involving goats are especially heartbreaking because they are such naturally social animals who love to run and play with other goats.“

Nutritious Food of the Month

Expand Your Palate with Mung Beans

Care of Karen Soper and Lisa Pitman

Exploring different kinds of beans and legumes is something that most likely happens as the typical vegetarian expands their tastes and cooking repertoire. For some, they have been a staple for a long time, for others they are new green little gems. Originally cultivated in India and later migrating to China, mung beans have been a staple in the east for thousands of years. However travelled, today the tried and true nutrient value and nutrient quality of mung beans is an undisputable asset to the western vegetarian diet.

Mung beans have a bright (Shrek-like) green husk, with a yellowish flesh inside. They are small and round, about the size of pearl barley. Found in bulk food stores they are inexpensive too. Some common ways to eat mung beans include cooking them whole, with or without their skins, in soups or stews (much like lentils). Once cooked, they are very soft and smooth, presenting an almost creamy texture and sweet taste. Used raw they can be sprouted and thrown into salads for a nutritional boost.

These beans are easy to digest, an excellent source of plant protein, low in fat, low in sodium, high in fibre and a perfect food for low-calorie, nutrient-dense eating. Vitamin C is present in the sprouts, however not in the beans. Minerals that these beans contain include calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron. Vitamins include niacin, folate, vitamins A and K.

Combined in vegetable soup or as a stand-alone dahl, adding mung beans into the weekly meal plan will enhance your healthful vegetarian diet - one little green bean at a time.
