Don't be fooled into thinking cooler temperatures are a reason to hide! TVA continues to be active in reaching out to the public at outreach events to let people know about the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Since the Vegetarian Food Fair, we've focused on getting the word out at local health and wellness events, to drive the message home that any plan for turning your health around needs to include a transition to a vegetarian diet. Thanks to TVA's dedicated volunteers, we've recently attended the Markahm Health and Wellness Fair, the Active Living Fair in Scarborough, and the CBC Employee Wellness Fair in downtown Toronto. We've also responded to last minute requests and been able to send volunteers to the Tck Tck Tck event at Commensal, and the Ryerson Sustainable Food Event, ensuring that people know that the single best thing they can do for the environment and climate change is to go vegetarian. Looking forward, we'll be at the Toronto Diabetes Expo and the Whole Life Expo, a huge event where we'll be able to reach thousands of attendees. So don't lock yourself up for the winter just yet! If you're interested in volunteering at TVA's outreach events, visit veg.ca/volunteer and sign up for our Volunteer eNewsletter. Directory UpdatesThere's a new vegetarian restaurant in Richmond Hill! There is a variety of specialty rolls to pick from, including your typically non-veg choices, such as spicy "tuna" and "salmon"." Pulp Kitchen has opened up at a new location (1129 Queen Street East, just west of Jones). They'll be running a limited menu as they build up and will be announcing some exciting new items in the future. Mark World Diabetes Day with Veggies on Your Plate
Take Action on November 14th
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Canada and the cost of diabetes is estimated to be up to $9 billion a year. More specifically, type-2 diabetes is a prevalent form of diabetes affecting close to two million Canadians, and can lead to medical problems such as blindness, heart disease, and reduced blood supply to the limbs, leading to amputation, nerve damage, erectile dysfunction, and stroke.
The good news is that type-2 diabetes can be prevented or postponed by simply making healthy lifestyle choices. In fact, clinical research has shown that a low-fat, plant-based diet improves insulin sensitivity, helps weight loss and reduces blood sugar and cholesterol.
So what can you do to celebrate world diabetes day? Make November 14th the day you make a committment to adopting a plant-based diet. You'll want to increase the consumption of low-glycemic foods such as whole-grain cereals, beans, peas, lentils and pasta. Other low-glycemic foods include pumpernickel, rye, barley, oats, pasta, sweet potatoes, beans and vegetables.
Already vegetarian? Then mark world diabetes day by inviting someone you know who's at risk for type-2 diabetes to take the Veggie Challenge and reduce their risk!
