TVA Donations at Work

Bake-off

Morreen Gibson's winning Nuttville Cookies

The 2nd Annual Totally Fabulous Vegan Bake-Off was a huge success, that inspired over 250 people with its array of vegan treats on Saturday, October 3rd.

There were 39 contestants who entered with items as diverse as Blue Green Chocolate Truffle Explosion, Nuttville Cookies, and Perfect Potluck Pesto Bread. Samplers got to try different dishes and vote for their favourite, while a team of judges made their picks in 15 categories including best raw dessert, best use of local ingredients, and most amazing presentation.

Donations from TVA supporters allowed us to expand the event this year, moving it to a larger location,  growing promotions, and bringing in more people who learned first-hand that delicious and sweet don't go hand in hand with cruelty.

A is for Awesome: Where to Find Your Vitamin A

Vitamin A is one of our essential fat-soluble vitamins (DEAK – is an easy way to remember them all). Retinol is the animal form of vitamin
A, whereas beta carotene is the plant form. However abundant in a healthy diet, vitamin A seems like it is less understood because we tend to hear more about vitamins C, B1, B2, B3, and D to name a few. So let’s get familiar with the reasons why vitamin A is so important, and how we can obtain it.

Our bodies require vitamin A for many critical functions - primarily body tissue repair and maintenance, immune function, and skin health. It also improves vision and prevents night blindness, plays a role in preventing cancer, promotes the growth of strong bones, hair, teeth, skin, and gums, and protects us against pollution via its antioxidant activity fighting free radicals.

Natural sources of vitamin A include:

  • green vegetables such as kale, watercress, dandelion greens, broccoli and spinach
  • yellow/orange fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupes, yams, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, apricots, papayas, and carrots
  • other less likely sources such as spirulina and garlic!

It is true that even when our diets are full of vitamin rich plant foods there is still a chance of deficiency due to consuming antagonistic substances, or poor digestion. To optimize your vegetarian nutrition, try to avoid substances like: alcohol, coffee, cortisone, excessive iron, nitrites, sodium benzoate and mineral oil. Also, be cautious of other vitamin deficiencies (for example vitamin D deficiency can lead to vitamin A deficiency). Regarding digestion - be sure to sit down to eat, chew, enjoy and consume water or beverages after finishing a meal.

This fall gather your vitamin A from the fields and have a happy fall season with the best of the bright yellow/orange root-veggies!
