Lonely Planet voted best vegetarian- friendly travel guide by PETA

"Lonely Planet will teach you how to say, I'm vegan, and ask, Do you make that without meat? in languages from Italian to Mandarin to Nepali. And no matter where your travels take you, from Seattle to Hawaii or from Venezuela to Shanghai, Lonely Planet keeps vegetarians in mind, listing veg-friendly restaurants, providing tips on how to interpret local menus, suggesting questions to ask your server, and offering tips on making your trip a culinary experience you'll never forget. Many of the city-specific guides have entire sections on where to go if you're vegetarian..." Jan. 2006

Tip: If you are backpacking and staying in hostels, you can almost always borrow a copy of Lonely Planet from a fellow traveler and read up on your next destination. I did this while traveling through Asia to save carrying extra weight.

PETA's 2006 Vegetarian Report Card: Hotels

"We surveyed the top hotel chains in the US and found that while many have good vegetarian options, compassionate, health-conscious guests may want to dine at local restaurants, which are often more accommodating. Hyatt Hotels and the Ritz-Carlton brand came out on top. The Marriott hotel chain leads the way in the second tier, and Hilton hotels offer a solid amount of vegetarian fare..."
