We have been doing a printed directory in the Toronto area for over 10 years. Find out what is involved in doing one for your own town. Our How-to page includes: 12 basic steps, budgets, tips and more.

Welcome to our 2007 edition. Since last year we have been featuring Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods such as The Annex, Kensington Market, and Queen St. West. We encourage you to get out and explore this increasing veggie-friendly city that features over 60 vegetarian eateries, six organic markets, and countless natural food stores. We publish a web edition (see sections above) and an annual print edition (see right).

Two new vegetarian restaurants have opened.
Sadie's serves breakfast and lunch while Jean's is dinner only.

[veg rest.] Sadie's Diner & Juice Bar – day o
504 Adelaide St. W. (e. of Bathurst), 416-777-2343[view inside Sadie's]
New veggie brunch and lunch spot open since January 2007. All-day brunch menu includes organic free-range eggs, tofu scramble, Yves veggie “bacon" or "sausages”, organic buckwheat waffles and pancakes, breakfast burrito, cereal with soy milk or organic 2%, and fair trade organic coffee and tea. Lunch menu features samosas, a vegan soup, chili, substantial salads, and more. Dinner will be coming soon. Moreen reports that the place has a “retro vibe – very funky decor with arborite tables etc. Staff are friendly.” Currently open daily 8am to around 5 or 6pm, but the kitchen closes at 3pm.

[veg rest.] Jean's Vegetarian Kitchen – c
1262 Danforth Ave (at Greenwood), 416-778-1388
This new Thai-Malay vegetarian restaurant is a welcome addition to the meat-centric Danforth. NOW magazine rates them NNNN (out of five) in a recent review. They recommend the spring rolls, Szechuan hot and sour soup (”virtuous veggie broth, crunchy Chinese 'shrooms, silky tofu”), pad thai, Pad Kee Mau (pad thai plus “crisp cauliflower and broccoli flowerets, Thai-basil-scented sesame oil and surprisingly convincing faux shrimp”), and green curry with "duck" (”a dizzying mix of ersatz bird, baby bok choy and cubed bell pepper in light coconut broth”). Note: all the faux meats contain whey.
Colleen enjoyed the Malaysian Curry ("really really good") and the Tom Kha Thai soup made with lemon grass, coconut milk and veggies.
Egg and nut alert – most of the noodle dishes contain egg, and some dishes are garnished with cashews and crushed peanuts. The kitchen will gladly leave them out if requested.
Open for dinner only Tue-Sun 5-10pm. Closed Monday, holidays. Cash only.

[rest.] [vegan Ethiopian meal]M & B Yummy - Classic Ethiopian food!
1263 Queen St W. (at Brock) in Parkdale, 416-516-2798
While this is not a vegetarian restaurant, traditional Ethiopian cuisine has many vegan dishes. The owner has put together a Full Vegan Menu that is delicious and very affordable.
Everything on the menu is identified in green if it is vegan. The restaurant is open everyday from 10am to 10pm and serves all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner. The vegan dishes include soups, sandwiches, traditional Ethiopian dishes like Missir Wot (lentils) Shiro Wot (chickpeas), Gomen (greens) and many more (including Ethiopian vegan "eggs" for breakfast!)
The Full Vegan Plate – with all the vegan mains and injera bread (which is a huge meal) is only $7 (tax included)! The chef uses a separate chopping board, pots, and utensils for the preparation of the vegan dishes.

 The Friendly Thai – L
500 Queen St. W. (e. of Bathurst), 416-366-1221
Warning: Allison reports that the owners of The Friendly Thai "do not believe fish to be non-vegetarian" and have thus chosen to label as "vegetarian" several dishes which do indeed contain fish sauce, oyster sauce, etc. "Just so this note is not entirely negative, we were informed that the tofu satay with peanut sauce is vegan and there is also a coconut milk stir fry with cashews that can be made vegan upon request. Anything with a pre-prepared sauce, such as any of the curries and some of the pad thais, we were told, contains a fish sauce base even if labeled vegetarian on the menu and cannot be altered."

— Dec. 16, 2006 —

Note: Many restaurants will be closed on certain days over the holidays – it is best to call ahead. See the side bar of our Vegetarians & the holiday season page for special offers at restaurants and stores. The page also has meal ideas, gift suggestions, e-card links, dinner tips and recipe sites.

Richmond Hill

"They decided not to renew their lease as they were not getting the business they expected. Their Markham location remains open. Very sad as there aren't a whole lot of veg options in Richmond Hill, especially dim sum. Gourmet Vegetarian on Beaver Creek just doesn't compare."

“Owner Sasha treats cooking like another kind of art. She opened this tiny mainly vegetarian/organic café to showcase her food/art and her belief that organic is more of a living attitude rather than just consuming organic food” –Toronto Star.
“The atmosphere is very lively and contemporary with artists' installations on the walls, yet small and cozy with coloured cushions and books available for use while visiting. They have symbols on their menu for vegetarian, vegan and wheat-free (although I noticed that some items were vegan and didn't have the symbol). They've got a lunch, dinner and brunch menu (including Ambrosial organic maple coconut quinoa porridge). I had their roasted sweet potato wedges with a roasted red pepper salsa (normally comes with a non-vegan dip, but they made this special for me). I also had a roasted veggie & hummus wrap with a side salad of mixed baby greens and balsamic dressing. I tasted my friend's tomato vegetable soup (of the day) and it was out of this world! I believe that it had coconut oil in there that gave it a delicious and exotic sweet flavour.” –Kera.

Spring Rolls launches vegan menu
Aug 3, 2006
Back in June, Doug alerted us that Spring Rolls’ menu included what appear to be vegetarian options listed as "vegetable and tofu" and "vegetarian". The problem was their definition of "vegetarian" included oyster sauce and chicken stock. We followed up with the owner and pressed for a solution. Good news: After several emails and a personal meeting, they added a pure vegetarian menu at all their locations in addition to their main menu. They followed our suggestion to use a vegetarian "oyster" sauce that relies on shiitake mushrooms in lieu of oyster, and the "dishes are cooked on a separate wok with separate oil so there is no contact with meat."
spring rollsSpring Rolls has several restaurant locations in Toronto including recently opened "EAST" across from City TV. The new menu can be viewed at www.springrolls.ca.

Hidden animal ingredients at other restaurants
After seeing our Spring Rolls story on the web, Jean-Guy wrote us to say: “The same is true (about non-vegetarian, veggie-identified food) for The Bowl, at Yonge and Grosvenor, the Green Mango (the fish salad dressing) and some of the items on the menu at Rollu Sushi at Bloor and Spadina. ...Ginger restaurants (at least the one on Church St.) actually DO get it. All their veggie-identified options are meat and fish free!” Golden Thai in Downtown Toronto is another good place to check out.
In order to avoid hidden fish ingredients at restaurants that serve traditional east-Asian cuisine, it is best to clearly mention no fish, oyster, bonito, etc. Also try requesting “vegan”, since this word is clearer than “vegetarian” for some places. Also see our ingredients page for more information.
