Veggie Toronto

Where to find delicious vegetarian and vegan food on and off campus

Vegetarian restaurants, food stores & farmers markets

For detailed listings in Toronto, click on a neighbourhoods link to the right, or see the map on our restaurants page.

At York University, the York Animal Rights Group‘s top restaurant picks are the Grad Lounge, Indian Flavour and The Underground. See where to find vegetarian and vegan food at York for full details and many more vegetarian-friendly places.

Pick up a copy of the printed 2009 Vegetarian Directory for a convenient pocket-sized directory of veg-friendly restaurants and stores. They will be available free of charge, starting Sept 5, 2008 at the Annual Vegetarian Food Fair.

Fast food fix

• Falafel sandwiches are good and cheap vegan fare. Falafel is a signature Middle Eastern pita sandwich filled with crispy balls of deep-fried chickpea batter, veggies and tahini sauce. For a discussion of the best falafel in Toronto, check out podcast 103's write-up.
• Most pizza places offer excellent vegetarian options. If ordering a full pizza you can request "no cheese." Olives make a nice salty substitute for cheese. Pizzaiolo has vegan slices.
• A&W, Burger King and Harvey‘s offer a veggie burger, but Lick’s Nature Burger is the best.
• Also try Taco Bell, Teriyaki Experience, Spring Rolls and Burrito Boyz.
See our fast food page for details about the chains.

Tips on going vegetarian

See our what to eat page to find shortcuts to vegetarian cooking, basic meal ideas and recipes.

Hummus, avocado, nut butters and veggie deli slices all make quick sandwich fillings.

Come down to our Resource Centre (17 Baldwin, Wed 6-9 pm and Sat 1-4 pm) and borrow some cookbooks or DVDs.

Learn about protein, calcium, iron and B12. See our vegetarian nutrition page.

Take a vegetarian cooking class.

Also, check out our weekly podcast, list of veggie groups and links for finding a veggie roommate:

  • The Toronto Vegetarian Podcast (TVP) is recorded weekly by our Resource Centre crew. Each show is roughly 25 minutes long and explores vegetarian cooking, recipes, news, upcoming events, new books that have been added to our lending library, and pretty much anything else that comes up.
  • Check out the social groups that are part of Toronto Vegetarian Association.
  • Looking for a vegetarian roommate or job? Check out current postings for housing, jobs, and personal ads in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver. These are direct links to Craigslist that mention the word "vegetarian".

More information will be added soon. In the meantime, explore veg.ca. Use the powerful search feature to find what you are looking for.
