So you want to make a New Year's resolution – Why not make this year the year for mutual kindness? Let's make a conscientious effort to be kind to the Earth, to the animals, to each other and, don't forget, to ourselves. Try one of the following:

  • Become a vegetarian or, if you're already a vegetarian, why not try veganism? There are so many excellent socio-economical, environmental and ethical reasons to do so. You'll be doing a world of good for your health, the Earth and the animals. If you're already vegetarian, you could help spread the veggie message by donating to a veg. group (pardon the shameless plug, but as a non-profit charitable group, TVA graciously accepts donations!!).

  • Plant an organic garden this year. Plenty of resources are available at bookstores, libraries and even TVA. Gardening relieves stress and you can enjoy the rewards of your hard work at the supper table.

  • Remember the animals. Volunteer at your local humane society. Give donations to animal sanctuaries. Adopt a stray. These overburdened organizations need all the help they can get!

  • Tell those important to you that you love them everyday. It is easy to get caught up in the trivialities of day to day life. Often, we lose sight of what is truly important. Relationships with others are what give our lives meaning. Don't be stingy with your love. Remind those close to you how much they mean to you.

  • Take time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Go for a long walk. Appreciate nature's beauty. If you're not an outdoorsy type, make yourself some herbal tea and read the Sunday paper – whatever does it for you. In our busy lifestyles, we often neglect our own happiness. This year, vow to take time out each day to do something nice for yourself. Happiness is contagious. When you're happier, those around you tend to be happier.

These are just a few suggestions. When it comes to leading a kinder, gentler existence, the possibilities are endless. Please take time this year to consider how you will contribute to making the world a better place. It doesn't take much.
