Indian vegetarian scene: Toronto updates
Friday, 01 June 2007

VEDA - Healthy Indian Takeout
506 Church St (n. of Carlton), 416-961-9797
www.vedatakeout.com
Veda's newest location has just opened in the Village. Healthy low-fat menu made with authentic Indian spices. In fact, most dishes contain NO added oil. Half the menu selections are vegetarian (including Butter Tofu) and vegan (including Mixed Vegetable Curry, Chickpea Curry, Red Lentils). The Monthly Feature and Daily Soup are always vegetarian as well, and are often vegan. Dine-in, patio, takeout, and delivery available. See website for hours.

North of the 401 and west of the 400
The area is home to several Indian eateries. Tom reports that Super Indian Cuisine, at Finch west of Weston Road, is no longer completely vegetarian.

Across the street and further west, Bangali Sweet House (2501 Finch Ave. W., 416-740-9566) is still 100% vegetarian. They serve mostly sweets, but also some savouries like cheese pakoras, vegetable pakoras, aloo tiki (potato pancakes) and samosas.

Also nearby, at Islington Avenue and Albion Road, there are three vegetarian restaurants: Gagan (1050 Albion Rd, 416-747-0075), Brar Sweets (2646 Islington [image: South Indian meal at Saravanaa Bhavan]Ave, 416-745-4449), and Rajdhani (2658 Islington Ave, 416-748-7108).

Also in the neighbourhood is Surati Sweet Mart (4801 Keele St, near York University, 416-665-8545). Bhartpuri Sweets & Restaurant, at Albion near highway 27, has closed.

Richmond Hill
Saravanaa Bhavan (670 Hwy 7 East, Unit 8, Richmond Hill) will open their third location in late June.

Little India
Narula's has closed. Siddhartha Pure Vegetarian Cuisine (1411 Gerrard St. E. w. of Coxwell, 416-466-9777) will be changing to a non-vegetarian restaurant soon. The owner says that there will still be a vegetarian menu that is cooked separately. Fortunately, Udupi Palace (1460 Gerrard St. E. w. of Coxwell, 416-405-8189) is still serving pure vegetarian South Indian cuisine.
