In the NewsShark Fin Bans Catching On in the GTAFollowing in the footsteps of Brantford, Oakville has become the second municipality to ban shark fin. Council voted unanimously to have staff prepare a bylaw to ban this cruel product from restaurants within city limits. Mississauga and Toronto are both also contemplating bans on shark fin. Councillor De Baeremaeker has started a Fin Free Toronto campaign. Sign the petition at www.finfreetoronto.com and email his assistant at jhui@toronto.ca if you can help collect signatures through your personal networks or volunteer at events for them to collect signatures. Toronto Pig Save Exposing Toronto SlaughterhousesToronto Pig Save, a relatively new animal activist group in Toronto, is stepping up their efforts to expose the cruelties of Toronto's hidden slaughterhouses. The group has begun actively and bravely documenting the transport and unloading of pigs entering Toronto's slaughterhouses, as well as organizing peaceful demonstrations outside these horrendous facilities. Making the Personal PoliticalAnimal activist Camille Labchuk has been a committed vegan for years, but she knew that she could extend her work for animals beyond her own personal choices and into the political and legal spheres. She's since gotten involved with the Green Party of Canada and recently completed her second year of law school. Click here to read an interview with Camille about her journey to veganism as well as her political activism and how she hopes to incoporate animal rights into her legal career. Nutritious Food of the MonthCrazy for CurrantsCare of Andrea Gourgy Fresh currants are typically grown in northern climates like Canada, but nevertheless, most of us are not very well acquainted with these tart little wonders. Currants are a lesser known member of the berry family, related to gooseberries. And they're well worth adding into your food repertoire — they are an excellent source of vitamin C, and also contain potassium, iron and fibre. Currants were first cultivated in Scandinavia, and then later in England. In fact, during World War II, the British government encouraged black currant cultivation (which was then made into black currant syrup) as it was one of the only sources of vitamin C available in Britain at the time. For those of you who have been to England, you've probably noticed that black currant syrup (or fruit concentrate), called Ribena, is still quite popular there today. Fresh currants are often confused with dried Zante or Champagne grapes (which also go by the name currant), however, these tiny raisins are not related to the currant in the berry family. Fresh currants are available in black, red and white. They can be used in savoury or sweet dishes such as jams, sauces, soups, puddings and tarts. Many Canadians actually grow currants in their backyards, but they can also be found in farmers markets right now (June through August typically). Keep in mind that currants should be plump and firm when purchasing, and they can be kept in the refrigerator covered for about four days. Fresh is a Toronto landmark at this point. They were on the vegetarian train before a lot of other restaurants caught on, and their concept has been copied endless times. It's still worth coming to the original source though; I've yet to have a juice or smoothie in the city that beats the ones you can get at Fresh. My favourite is Singing Grasshopper, and that's the one I got with my meal on my most recent visit to Fresh for a friend's birthday. We arrived at 5:30 pm on a Friday and had no trouble getting a table for four, but be prepared to wait if you go during peak times. If you're looking to end the meal with something sweet, I can recommend the pastries from Sweets of the Earth, or perhaps one of their coffee-based smoothies. It'd be hard not to find something on Fresh's large menu for even the most devoted of meat eaters. TVA Discount? 15% off take-out (excluding baked goods) Veg Status? Vegetarian Where?
