Etobicoke

This western suburb of Toronto includes several South Indian vegetarian eateries.

[veg cafe] Bangali Sweet House
2651 Islington Ave (second plaza north of Albion Rd), 416-746-9393
~~Sit-down and takeout service with full Bangail vegetarian menu.
~~Tom reports that the menu is "typical of the Bangali style at neighbouring restaurants Gagan Sweets, Brar Sweets and, directly across the street at Rajdhani. I had a vegan thali with plain salad, rice, eggplant with cashew nuts, cauliflower, chickpeas, spinach (happily absent of cheese!), and plain roti. It was all delicious with pleasant spicing (including a whole cardamom pod in one of the items), and quite filling."
~~Hours (9/17/2009): Mon-Thu 9:30am to 9:30pm, Fri-Sun 10am-10pm.

[veg cafe] Brar Sweets – k
2646 Islington Ave (at Albion Rd), 416-745-4449
~~Vegetarian East Indian cuisine.“What it misses in ambiance – think donut shop – is made up for by first-rate medium-spiced veggie curries.” – NOW
~~NOW Magazine gave them a rating of NNNN out of 5. Not everything is vegan, so you may wish to ask if this is a concern. Metal plates are used for the set thali meal, other items are served on styrofoam.
~~Hours (9/17/2009): Mon-Fri 11 am – 9 pm. Sat 11 am – 10 pm. Sun 11 am – 9:30 pm.

[veg cafe] India Gate Sweets And Restaurant
1050 Albion Rd (at Islington), 416-747-0075
~~Indian lacto-vegetarian meals and sweets. Table seating or take-out.
~~Hours (9/17/2009): daily 10am-10pm.

[veg cafe] Rajdhani
2658 Islington Ave (at Albion Rd), 416-748-7108
~~Punjabi Indian family-run eatery. Many vegan items: channa garam masala, curried spinach, thalis, plus vegan pakoras and samosas and other savory snacks.
~~Located in the same busy Islington Ave & Albion Rd plaza as Brar Sweets. The Thali (rice, various curries, salad and choice of roti or nan) is $4.99. Note: The rice is no longer cooked with milk. Substitutions can be requested (e.g. pakora) when ordering the Thali. Samosa's are three for a dollar. Many other menu items. No eggs are used.
The thali is served on a metal serving plate, but other items may be served on styrofoam, but you can request a real plate. Utensils only come in throw-away plastic, but it is traditional to eat Indian food with your hands.
~~Hours (9/17/2009): daily 11 am – 10 pm.

[veg cafe] Shayona Foods
46 Claireville Dr (Hwy 427 and Finch), 416-987-5097
www.shayona.ca (not working yet)
~~Small Gujarati food store and restaurant opposite a newly constructed Hindu temple. Limited seating.
~~Opposite the Hindu temple (BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir). They serve a daily Thali (complete meal) for $5. Take-out or dine in, but they have limited space for eating. Jan wrote to us: "Buried among ugly industrial warehouses, the discerning vegetarian will stumble upon Shayona Foods . A grocery plus catering establishment, they serve outstanding vegetarian food from the western Indian state of Gujarat, birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi."
~~Hours (9/17/2009): Mon-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat-Sun 10am-9pm.

[store] Organic Abundance – O d
3066 Bloor St W (w. of Royal York)
