Is vegan “ice cream” even ice cream? Arguably (and by that we mean technically), it is not! The important thing is we’ve got a list of local spots where you’ll find the good stuff: delicious, dairy-free concoctions that will satisfy any ice cream lover’s craving for cool.

This all-vegan and gluten-free bake shop has two locations in Toronto but their soft serve ice cream is only available at their Kensington Market location – 244 Augusta Ave, during summer months. Enjoy the classics: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Swirl in a cone or paired with a baked treat.

Toronto’s kid-friendly vegan restaurant, dessert bar, ice cream parlour and candy shop is located in the heart of Kensington Market. They feature a rotating selection of over 40 flavours of silky smooth made-in-house, small batch, premium artisanal ice cream made using a cashew nut base. Winner of the TVA Veg Award in 2016 for “Best Vegan Ice Cream” in Toronto.

The mother/daughter team behind Kelly’s Bake Shoppe is as serious about taste as they are about nutrition and sustainability and they take “goodies” to a whole new level by filling their creations with only organic, fair-trade ingredients. On their ice cream menu you’ll find chocolate, vanilla and swirl soft serve and ice cream cookie sandwiches featuring chocolate chip or snickerdoodle.

Toronto’s first dedicated vegan frozen dessert parlor, where products are handmade with fair trade organic bananas and all-natural ingredients. On the menu you’ll find soft serve, shakes, cakes, and Nanapops (on a stick) in wide a variety of flavours and dessert combinations.

The Chufa Co. has converted a shipping container into a pop up shop offering vegan, nut-free, soy-free ice cream until late September. Their Their tigernut-milk-based flavours include Ground Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Brownie and Roasted Strawberry & Cardamom. Yum!

Multiple other vegan flavours rotate on the menu. Beyond the chocolate, on a single check in, I was able to choose from Lemon sorbet, Thai Watermelon, Avocado Lime, Sticky Mango Coconut Rice.

This Queen West gelato shop produces a variety of dairy-free and vegan sorbetti. For their dairy-free delights, they use coconut milk, rice milk and almond milk and most of their gelati and sorbetti are gluten free. There is also a location in Pusateri’s in the Bay on Queen Street.

This Montreal-based ice cream shop has expanded with two Toronto locations. Vegan options include two choices of cookie dough that can be served with dark chocolate drizzle or eaten alone, and two flavours of a vegan popsicle on a stick (chocolate or vanilla), which can be dipped in dark chocolate. Note: La Diperie’s dark chocolate dip, while in itself vegan, is also used for dipping dairy products and may therefore contain trace amounts. Toppings include number of vegan offerings – hazelnut, almond, peanut, pistachio, oreo, shredded coconut, and banana chips.

Most of the dozens (or hundreds?) of Yogurty’s locations across the GTA now carry two vegan flavours at all times so you can build your own vegan frozen yogurt sundae!

Heading Up North?
Grab some vegan ice cream near Barrie! There is an ice cream stand on Bayfield St. (Hwy. 27) just north of town. They sell vegan soft serve with all kinds of options for toppings and even a vegan chocolate dip!
