If you enjoy authentic Indian cuisine – head over to Truly India restaurant in the east end of the GTA.
One is greeted warmly with the questions “Is this your first time here? / Are you vegan or vegetarian?” The majority of the delicious offerings are vegan, with dishes that are vegetarian clearly indicated. Only fresh ingredients are used in the dishes.
Next, one is treated to a multi-item tasting consisting of a couple of tablespoons of rice, topped with samples of the many and varied dishes available. I tasted (among several) a chana masala, a baingan bartha (eggplant), mixed lentils and vegetable kofta, each served with a fresh dollop of rice to allow a unique taste of each. The selections are divided between ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ curries – the latter having delicious sauces.
There was not one dish I didn’t like and so I decided to order one ‘wet’ and one ‘dry’ for takeout. Oh, the challenge of choosing! Solved, graciously, by having my ‘dry’ selection a half order of 2 different dishes, one of which was the methi aloo (potato and fenugreek) and the other “mixed vegetables”. For my ‘wet’ selection I chose the mixed lentils. The final touches included delicious basmati rice and a samosa – freshly cooked while I waited.
Oh, and the samosa purchase required a further tasting of the 4 dipping sauces available!
The prices are very reasonable with most of the curry mains in the $4.99 – $5.49 range, small rice at $2.49 and the samosa less than a loonie! Portions are very generous. Plan a visit soon!
