Musings from Carly: Veg Directory Assistant 2013
Ok folks, there’s only a week left! Time to get yourself out there and sample Toronto’s finest vegetarian and vegan creations! Here’s a last minute look at some veg-friendly fare that’s likely been delighting Summerlicious explorers so far.
Short Listed Vegetarian Fare:
Kultura (169 King St. E. 416-363-9000) offers mushroom orecchiette with a range of delicious mushrooms, pinot noir pear chutney, and old cheddar cheese, for both lunch and dinner.
Tundra at the Hilton Toronto (145 Richmond St. W. 416-860-6800) is featuring a creamy vegetarian summer pea risotto with kale chips, smoked paprika, and asparagus!
Célestin (623 Mount Pleasant Rd. 416-544-9035) has created a baby herb tomato salad with white chocolate and sorrel ice cream – for an appetizer! There’s no vegetarian main unfortunately, but perhaps you could have this twice?
Jaipur Grille (2066 Yonge St. 416-322-5678) has a selection of delicious vegetarian items including onions bhajias, samosa chaat, and chana masala. Definitely lots of amazing spices used in the making of this cuisine.
Linda Modern Thai (11 Karl Fraser Rd. 416-642-3866) has made a vegetarian version of their popular hot & sour soup, Vegetarian Tom Yum! They also offer mango sticky rice, deep fried banana, or tropical ice cream for dessert.
Crème Brasserie (162 Cumberland St. 416-962-7363) is serving up an ever so enticing pickled mushroom salad with a greek yogurt vinaigrette and porcini port wine gastrique. Also try their eggplant tart for your main.
Short Listed Vegan Fare:
Little Anthony’s Italian Restaurant (121 Richmond St. W. 416-368-2223) offers a vegan spin on a classic Italian meal: spaghetti. Tomato sauce, basil, spaghetti; yum! Finish with some equally classically Italian lemon gelato.
The Rosedale Diner (1164 Yonge St. 416-923-3122) features a Moroccan chickpea stew, complete with squash, sweet potato, ginger, and quinoa. You almost wish it was cold outside so you could cozy up with this stew. Almost.
Tabülè (2009 Yonge St. 416-483-3747) has created delicious vegan Middle Eastern menu items. Some of the highlights include a plate of hummus, babaganuj, tabule, and falafel, and a fried cauliflower main with tahini.
Grace Restaurant (503 College St. 416-944-8884) offers delicious summer harvest cannelloni with local wild leeks, pine nut gremolata, and veggie chips.
Il Mulino (1060 Eglinton Ave. W. 416-780-1173) is serving a carrot ginger and pear puree that sounds as deliciously summery as it does autumn-esque.
(Psst. Andrea, TVA’s Vegetarian Directory Coordinator, recently visted Alleycatz Restaurant Jazz Bar (2409 Yonge St. 416-481-6865) and informs me that the veg selection was impressive and the food was really good! Mushroom crustini anyone?)
Worth noting, these veg items are stand alone among the other courses on the 3 course menus. Perhaps call ahead and ask if they could make substitutions or have a veg meal available that’s not listed on the menu!
No matter where you’re headed, and whether you’re trying something new or opting for a classic, make sure you check out some Summerlicious before it’s gone for another year! Of course, we’re already looking forward to Winterlicious…
